Today marks the kick-off of the annual HR Tech Conference, the marquee event for professionals in the fields of HR, recruiting, and talent management. Just arrived in Chicago and haven’t yet had time to prepare? We’ve got you covered! Below is our guide to making the most of your time at HR Tech Conference 2016.

Attend Sessions That Help You Look at the Big Picture

The sessions that you attend is largely driven by the roles that you fulfill within your organization. However, to be successful in the modern business world, it is no longer enough to just do your job well. You must understand how your work ties into the success of your entire company. Furthermore, you need to be able to quantify the value of your work and effectively communicate this to management. For these reasons, be sure to attend some sessions that enable you to understand how your specific work ties into the big picture of organizational success.

Also, don’t forget to attend a session or two that cover aspects of HR or talent management that you are less familiar with. This will enable you to grow within your role and build upon your current professional foundation.

Stick to your schedule (sort of…)

Once you know the sessions that you would like to attend, be sure to set an agenda. This will allow you to plan your days and make the most of your time. Keep in mind, however, if a speaker or vendor demo catches your eye, don’t be afraid to deviate from your schedule. Additionally, schedule some free time to explore and make a point to walk through the expo floor.

Make New Friends!

Most likely, you are attending the HR Tech Conference with co-workers. This is great, however, you are missing out on a major opportunity if you stick with them for the entirety of the event. The HR Tech Conference offers you exposure to 8,000 passionate professionals, industry experts, and thought leaders for only 4 days every year. Be sure to make the most of it.

Spend some time navigating the conference alone. A fun goal we set for ourselves when going to conferences is to spark up a conversation with at least 5 different people. We have found that our best networking happens this way! Additionally, pushing outside of your comfort zone allows you to gain unique insights that you otherwise would have missed out on.

Talk with Vendors

The HR Tech Conference is the world’s largest expo of HR technology products and services. As such, there is no better opportunity to shop around and check out the latest tools on the market. If there are products that you would like to learn more about, be sure to check out a demo. Come prepared with the issues that you are currently facing and any product questions that you or your team may have. Talking through these points with vendors will tell you a lot about whether their solution is the right fit for your organization.

Party!

Although the conference itself offers great networking opportunities, the best way to connect with people is through extra-curricular social events. Just have fun with it! HR Tech serves as a great reminder of just how exciting and innovative our industry is. You are in a great city, surrounded by people who are passionate about the same things as you. Take it all in and learn as much as you can!
