Welcome to our first unveiling of Newton Recruiting Insights*. Coming fresh off of the #SHRM16 annual conference in Washington D.C., we thought it would be fitting to kick off this mini-series with our statistics surrounding conference attendance. From our user survey responses, we found that 59% of Talent Management and HR professionals attend conferences and events.

Top 3 Benefits of Attending a Conference

Based on our research, the benefits of attending a Talent Management or recruiting conference spans far and wide. However, the three most prevalent values that our users identified were:

1. To Increase Knowledge of Relevant Trends, Concepts, and Skills

The overwhelming majority of our customers reported that their number one reason for attending Recruiting and HR conferences is to gain knowledge that will promote professional and personal development. Whether it be staying up-to-date on the latest trends, understanding emerging concepts, or picking up new skills, Talent Management and HR conferences offer a plethora of educational opportunities that allow professionals to further their development.

The primary way that our users like learning is from the formal learning sessions that are offered at conferences and events. From workshops and classes, to keynote speakers and panel discussions, these different mediums provide significant exposure to resources that increase knowledge.

Beyond these formal sessions, however, our users also like to gain knowledge from the informal conversations that can be had at conferences. Such interaction allows for candid discussion which often leads to the most valuable and in-depth insights. Additionally, the other attendees are all professionals working in related industries. There are few better ways to increase one’s knowledge than connecting with like-minded peers, analysts, consultants and influencers to draw lessons from one another.

2. Network With Peers and Influencers

The second most popular reason that Newton users attend conferences and events is to network with peers and influencers. With so many professionals gathered in one place, conferences offer an incredible opportunity to connect with others and build not only your personal brand but your organization’s brand as well. You know the saying it’s not about what you know, but who you know? There is some truth there, so be sure to spark up a conversation and stay in touch with those connections that you make.

3. Get to Business

The third most popular reason that Newton customers attend Recruiting and HR conferences and events is to conduct some form of business. Many of our customers mentioned that they attend conferences to either catch up with or find new vendors, partners or customers. Conferences give you the unique opportunity to break out from behind your computer screen and have a face-to-face business conversation. This is important, because, after all, a handshake is the cornerstone of every great business deal.

So Which Conferences are Newton Users Attending?

SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition

Overwhelmingly, the most popular conference that our users attend is the SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition. This conference offers the largest gathering of HR and Talent Management professionals in the world, boasting hundreds of sessions that offer practical tools and resources you need to create and implement successful HR practices. The team here at Newton attended #SHRM16 this past June in Washington D.C. and we can’t speak highly enough of the event. HR Tech Conference

The second most popular conference attended by Newton users is the HR Tech Conference. This Conference “focuses on the business process and organizational success enabled by technology, not the bits and bytes of it.” Boasting the world’s largest expo of HR technology products and services, HR Tech continuously attracts the leading experts and analysts in the industry. This is a great conference for meeting with vendors and vetting the endless supply of HR Tech offerings.

Limited By Budget Constraints?

For the larger national conferences, when you factor in registration fees, flight costs, hotel expenses and meals, the price of attendance can quickly add up and total thousands of dollars. Many organizations simply do not have the budget to afford this expense. Luckily, there are thousands of local events and conferences, as well as online conferences, lectures, and webinars, that you can utilize to experience the same benefits.

Based on our research, Newton users are taking full advantage of these resources as well. From our survey, we found that 54% of Newton users attend local SHRM events. Furthermore, amongst these attendees, there is a high degree of loyalty. 21% of those that go to local SHRM events say they always attend them, and 76% attend whenever their schedule permits.

From the research presented above, it is clear that recruiting and HR professionals attend Talent Management and HR conferences as a way to advance in their careers. Remember, however, conferences come in all shapes and sizes, so even if you can’t make it to a major one, local events and even online webinars can offer great value as well.
