Have you received the call? That alarmist call from a salesperson who quotes some astronomical percentage of job seekers that are apparently trying to apply to your jobs from a mobile device but can’t. The horror!
Sure, job seekers are using their phones to research potential employers and jobs. But, put yourself in a job seeker’s shoes for a minute. Would you apply to your next opportunity from a device with a 4-7 inch screen? Do you store your resume on your phone? Can you? Furthermore, are you going to create a profile on a job board and then use it to apply to every job without tweaking the content for the specific job? Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s do the numbers.
Are mobile recruiting numbers for real? Who knows?
The mobile recruiting space is full of misinformation and nearly unverifiable statistics. I’ve heard different numbers from different camps (this post is not intended to point fingers). Whether intentionally or not, salespeople often spread misinformation about the number of job seekers that are actually trying to apply to jobs from smartphones. I’ve heard claims that as high as 80% of all job seekers are trying to apply from mobile devices. Perhaps this is true in certain industries but substantiating these numbers is next to impossible. In the end, misinformation is causing marketplace confusion and making it difficult for employers to create concise mobile recruiting strategies.
Independent research tells another story about job applications and smartphones
Meanwhile, The Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world, found that only 18% of Americans claim to have submitted a job application from a mobile device. The same survey from Q4 2014 shows that 43% of the surveyed panelists have looked up information about a job from a smartphone.
Also interesting, the survey provided the following insight
“Lower-income smartphone owners are especially likely to use their phone during a job search. Compared with smartphone owners from households earning $75,000 or more per year, those from households earning less than $30,000 annually are nearly twice as likely to use a smartphone to look for information about a job — and more than four times as likely to use their phone to actually submit a job application.”
