Newton Release Scheduled for June 10th

hounds_release_themRelease the hounds! Ok, that may be a little dramatic. We have one of our biggest releases ever scheduled for June 10th. There are 6 major new features being added to Newton such as:

  • Newton Email assistant
  • Online Employment Applications
  • New Newton Online Knowledge / Support Center

In addition to the new features, there are over 20 enhancements in this release. Many of the enhancements (over 60%) are requests we’ve received from our customers. Finally, we’re not done here. We’re going to turn around and do another special release by the end of June before we ship Newton 4.0 in July. It’s going to be a busy summer.

Stay Tuned.

Applicant Tracking Software Demo – Never Ending Video Production

When we started Newton Software back in Jan. 2009, we wanted to build a website that actually provided people with information about our product. Novel huh? We wanted the site to be interactive. We wanted lots of videos and images of our product. We wanted bling. After all, Steve and the design team go to great lengths to create a “rich” user experience (software lingo for – they make it look sweet and cool to use).

What you forget when you are launching a content rich site is how much effort it takes to continually keep the videos and images fresh. To complicate matters (for me), we’re constantly making enhancements and adding to our product. So every 5-6 weeks or so I have to make a new video.

The other day, our web team called me the Scorsese of applicant tracking software product demos. I’m not sure if I was flattered or if they were just having fun with me. Regardless, I had to update our product demo this week and will do so again in about 2 weeks. This might not be The Departed but, I think it represents our product pretty well. If you want to watch a video with a table of contents you can visit our demo page.

Spoiler Alert! This video contains a feature that will be released June 4th.

New in Newton: Review Request Emails

review-request-email

This is a big week of us here at Newton. We released Newton v.3.8.4 of our popular applicant tracking software and we are moving. More on the move later. New in Newton today are Review Request Emails. These will replace “Review Request Alerts”. Yep, when you click the green “Review Request” on Monday, Newton will cue up an email that you’ll send to hiring managers or anyone that you want to review a resume. You can even send attachments. The feature is practically set up for you but, we recommend taking a look at the short guide that we sent you on Friday.

An Anti-Creativity Checklist

My Anti-Creativity Checklist from Youngme Moon on Vimeo.

When we started building applicant tracking software, our idea was to escape competitive cloning, to deviate instead of emulate and to innovate rather than chase.  We can’t wait to dive into DIFFERENT, a new book by Youngme Moon that explains how to succeed in a world where conformity reigns… but exceptions rule.

New in Newton: When assigning candidates, copy attachments over to the new job

copy-attachments

This weekend we launched another small Newton enhancement: when assigning candidates to jobs you can now copy attachments over to the new job. We also increased the maximum file size for attachments  to 2.5MB.

We have another large feature release coming near the end of the month.  We’ll be addressing the following:

  • Hiding system history messages
  • Adding “review request” email templates (the end of alerts as you know them)
  • Locking candidate records

New in Newton: Easy-to-use, stage-stage specific “Thank You Letters”

Automated rejection letters aren’t a new thing. But, having used these features ourselves over the years, we felt it was time to reinvent them.

Introducing Newton Thank You Letters, they’ve been a long time coming. Now you can quickly and easily send automatic, stage specific thank you letters to any candidate that has ever applied to or interviewed for any job at your company without additional administrative work. And, best of all, the feature is smart so you’ll know if applicants are assigned to other jobs or have received previous thank you messages.

We designed this feature to be flexible, to save you time and to help you continually improve your recruiting program. So far, our beta users are really excited about Thank You Letters. And,the feedback from applicants has been overwhelmingly positive too. People love to know where they stand.

Our product team spent a lot of time working on the experience (both employer and applicant), the interface, the workflow, and the efficiency of this feature. Many variations and hundreds of little tweaks later, we’re pretty sure we nailed it. We hope you’ll agree.

Here are some Thank You Letter “highlights”.

  • Newton comes standard with pre-built, customizable, thank you letter templates for every stage of the recruiting process. There is a set of corporate templates and a set for each user to personalize.
  • Choose the email aliases from which to send Thank You Letters, corporate or personal email addresses.
  • Decide which members of your team are permitted to send thank you letters.
  • Preview and customize individual thank you letters easily before sending. Choose your desired email alias too.
  • Newton will alert you if an applicant is a duplicate,  interviewing for another role at your company and if they’ve received previous thank you messages.
  • Pending Thank You Letters are stored so you can send them later and even send them in bulk.  This gives HR / recruiting departments better control of the messaging.

Here’s a short video to show you  how it works.

TEDxSF

tedxsf

I managed to secure an invitation to TEDxSF, an independent version of TED, at the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. I’ve never been to the Big TED conference but I’ve been a fan of the videos on the website for years. Calling TEDxSF a conference is not doing it justice. The event was more like a series mini-performances featuring musicians, entrepreneurs, scientists and change-makers.

All in all, independent TED events, TEDx, are less exclusive than Big TED. You apply for an invitation and you’re asked to write about how you’ve changed the world or at least how you’ve been an innovator. I wrote about being a recruiter for 10 years and realizing the need for better recruiting software, throwing caution to the wind and starting a technology company amidst the worst recession in recent memory. Maybe the TEDx committee felt sorry for me.

While the format of the performances was paradoxically similar, a thought provoking monologue aided by some slides and self-deprecating humor, the topics varied dramatically. I enjoyed every presentation and I loved the music and comedy too. Even the crowd was interesting, not the room full of geeks I’d anticipated, more chic, less geek.

Here are some highlights.

- Zoë Keating, a talented, avant cellist, informed the audience that computers crash but cellos don’t after her laptop crashed mid-performance.  For the record, it was a Mac.

-Gavin Newsome, San Francisco’s Mayor, was given 3 minutes to address the crowd. Ever the opportunist, he delivered an inspirational, self-promoting rant ending with, “San Francisco has always been a city of dreamers and doers”. At least he got that right.

-Taking advantage of the venue, Ryan Watt, the Director of Morrison Planetarium and Science Visualization at the Academy of Sciences, reminded us that we may not be alone.

-The best story of the afternoon was told by Jill Vallet, the founder of Playworks, a non-profit that brings physical activities to low-income urban schools.

-Proclaiming that Silicon Valley has been as influential as the industrial revolution, photographer, Doug Menuez, shared images of the Valley’s most brilliant innovators, some in their weakest moments.

Newton Attracts International Attention on Popular UK Recruiting Website

Last week, Recruiter, a UK-based recruiting website, ran a story focusing on Newton’s analytics capabilities. The article discusses our real-time recruiting metrics, our upcoming release of an RPO product and makes mention of some of our customers using Newton internationally.

This is not the first time Newton Software has attracted attention on the other side of the pond.  Earlier this year, Sue Weekes, a columnist for the UK’s Recruiter magazine featured Newton in a story highlighting Newton’s ease-of-use. The story discusses Newton’s emphasis on designing recruiting software that even managers will want to use.
